英文摘要 | Given the continued growth in the world’s population and the reliance on biofuels for sustainable energy production, the need to enhance the efficiency by which plants capture, utilize, and store energy is vital for our future. Across terrestrial plants there are three enzymes that primarily control the initial photosynthetic reduction of atmospheric carbon dioxide (CO2): ribulose-1,5-bisphosphate carboxylase/oxygenase (Rubisco), phosphoenolpyruvate carboxylase (PEPC), and carbonic anhydrase (CA). Therefore, across plant functional types these enzymes play a primary role in determining the rate and efficiency of photosynthesis. However, it is uncertain how these enzymes limit photosynthesis, and what structural and mechanical mechanisms control their reactions. Therefore, determining the kinetic parameters of these key enzymes is important for optimizing the biochemical control of plants to enhance the capture, conversion, and storage of solar energy. This proposed research is expected to increase our understanding of the photosynthetic conversion of solar energy into chemical energy, particularly the structure and function relationship of key photosynthetic enzymes. The expected outcomes from this novel approach will enhance our understanding of the enzymatic limitations of photosynthetic CO2 uptake and help determine rate-limiting steps for optimizing the efficiency of photosynthesis. This information will also increase the accuracy of mathematical models of photosynthetic response to changing environmental conditions and potentially guide the design for manipulating enzyme kinetics to improve the rates and efficiency of photosynthesis. |
