| 英文摘要 | How does European beech (Fagus sylvatica L.) cope with contemporary changes in climate? To address this question, a large tree-ring network of European beech will be analyzed within the proposed research fellowship. The main objective is to assess whether observed changes in climate (i.e. a warming trend since the 1980s) have resulted in changes in the climate sensitivity of beech. Therefore, the temporal stability of climate−growth relationships will be assessed. It is expected that signs of instability will be found throughout the species distribution range. Next to temporal stability of climate−growth relationships, the spatial synchrony of tree-growth patterns will be investigated as an 'early-warning signal' of observed climate change impacts. Particularly in areas where water is becoming more and more limited for the growth of beech, an unparalleled temporal coherence in tree-ring chronologies is expected to be observed over large geographical areas during the last decades. As a final indicator of climate change-induced stress, the phenomenon of "fevering" trees will be studied, which refers to a distinct change in the sensitivity of tree growth since the 1990s (i.e. higher sensitivity and lower autocorrelation). Fevering in tree growth is expected to be found especially at sites that recently became water-limited due to climate warming, since trees growing at such sites are likely badly adapted to drought in their architecture (i.e. large crowns and high above-ground biomass). Overall, this research will contribute important new insights on early-warning signals for increased vulnerability of forests to climate change. |
