英文摘要 | Saltmarshesandothercoastalecosystemsprovideimportantecosystemservicessuchascoastalprotection,asthevegetationactsasanobstructiontohydrodynamicforces,thusleadingtowaveattenuation.Whilemoststudiessofarhavefocusedontheeffectsofvegetationonhydrodynamics,crucialknowledgeonhowhydrodynamicsinturnaffectandpotentiallydamagesaltmarshplantsaremissing.Additionally,effectsofglobalwarmingonbiophysicalpropertiesofmarshplants,whichdeterminetheirwaveattenuationcapacity,areunknown.Wewill(i)quantifyhydrodynamicforcesusingwaverecordingstationsatthemarginofWaddenSeasaltmarshesanddetermineitsspatialandtemporalvariationatsitesdifferinginexposure.Inparallel,vegetationstructureandtheeventuallossofbiomasswillbenon-destructivelydeterminedandcorrelatedtotherecordedhydrodynamicconditions.Undercontrolledexperimentalconditions(ii)thresholdsofhydrodynamicforcesbeyondwhichsaltmarshplantssufferphysicaldamagewillbeassessedinatruetoscaleflumestudy.Weexpectthresholdstobespeciesspecific,asplantspeciesinsaltmarshessignificantlydifferintheirbiophysicalpropertiessuchasplantflexibility.Furthermore,seasonalchangesinthesethresholdsduetodifferentplantdevelopmentstagesanddifferencesinthresholdsbetweensingleindividualsofcertainspeciesandthoseassociatedincomplexvegetationcanopieswillbedetermined.Finally,wewill(iii)analyseeffectsofrisingtemperaturesonbiophysicalpropertiesandthuswaveattenuationcapacityofmarshplantsinaworld-uniquewholeecosystemsalt-marshwarmingexperiment.Weexpectthatwarmingwillincreaseabove-andbelowgroundbiomass,prolongthegrowingseasonandincreasethelignincontentofplants.Overall,thismightincreasethecoastalprotectionfunctionofsaltmarshesinawarmerworld.Theresultswillbemadeavailabletobefedintobothhydrodynamicmodelsofwaveimpactonland-wardlyingseadefencesaswellasintomodelsofmarshevolutionunderdifferentclimatechangeandsealevelrisescenarios.Thefindingswillthushelptoassessthecoastalprotectionfunctionofsaltmarshesadequatelyinthefutureandtobetterdealwithimpactsofecologicalstochasticityandextremeeventssuchasstormsurgesoncoastalsaltmarshes. |
