Crustal S-wave Q estimated from M-L amplitude I: attenuation in different tectonic regions of China

英文摘要S wave maximum amplitude and period data reported in the Annual Bulletin of Chinese Earthquakes are used to study the S wave attenuation in crust and the regional variation of material quality factor Q(0) in China. We obtained an average Q(0) (Q at 1 Hz) value of 367 for the entire area of China. The highest values of regional Q0 we found are 460 for the South China platform, 442 for the Tarim basin and 419 for the Ordos plateau, while we obtained a lower regional Q(0) of 294 for North China, and a similarly low value of 295 for the Sichuan-Yunnan region. Our results indicate that for tectonically stable cratonic regions, such as the Tarim basin I Ordos plateau and South China platform, Q(0) is usually high, in contrast, for tectonically active regions, such as the deforming Sichuan-Yunnan shear zone that lies on the eastern margin of the Tibetan plateau, and the extensional North China basin, the Q(0) is generally low. This regional Q(0) variation closely parallels the observed Pn velocity patterns: in regions of fast Pn velocity the S wave Q(0) is high, while the regions having slow Pn velocity often exhibit a low Q(0).
