英文摘要 | The strength and durability of reinforced concrete (RC) bridges are negatively impacted over time by environmental stressors. Primary factors such as atmospheric chlorides concentration, mean temperature and climate change accelerates the rate of diffusion of aggressive ions through concrete surfaces. This leads to rapid corrosion of rebars and causes reduction in the cross-sectional area of rebar, strength of rebar, strength of concrete and bond between rebar and concrete, thereby, significantly influencing the overall strength and serviceability of RC bridges. Most of the Indian cities located in coastal region experiences a large climatic variation in terms of change in temperature leading to change in the rate of chloride diffusion in concrete. This study addresses the structural degradation of RC bridges due to rebar corrosion, loss of concrete strength, bond strength degradation and its effect on flexure and shear strength. Additionally, the serviceability parameters such as cover cracking, spalling and deflection of RC bridges has also been studied. A stochastic approach has been utilized to study the influence of weather conditions and climate change on strength and serviceability. The results indicate that the coastal climatic condition significantly impacts the corrosion of RC bridge girder, during both corrosion initiation and corrosion propagation phases. Further, it is observed that the shear strength of the bridge girder deteriorates more rapidly than the flexural strength. Finally, this study provides a logical conclusion that the bridge girder needs early repair or maintenance planning for restoring the serviceability limit state of cracking rather that for strength or deflection parameters. |
