英文摘要 | In the fluctuating changing environments of nature, a population, community or ecosystem, cannot be expected to be at a traditional equilibrium, a limit cycle or have a stationary distribution of population fluctuations, but it might have an aedt, an asymptotic environmentally determined trajectory. The aedt is a preferred path that a system follows accounting for environment change. It provides a characteristic for a system that can be understood as a focus of management because, as an environmentally determined trajectory, it can be used to understand how manipulating the trajectory of the environment will affect the course of the system. We outline the basic properties of the aedt and go beyond temporal change to consider changing distributions of populations on landscapes with the spatial aedt. Using the spatial aedt and the associated concept of experienced environments, we identify four basic elements affecting population stability and persistence: the rapidity of climate change, the strength of density dependence, landscape structure and connectedness. Global initiatives aim to stem anthropogenically driven climate change and the decline of biodiversity. The aedt could be a tool in these initiatives informing such features as how to design reserve systems, where connections on a landscape are needed, and how much high quality habitat should be preserved. |
