英文摘要 | Aims Dryland ecosystems are highly susceptible to variations in nutrient availability. The effects of nitrogen (N) availability on plant communities have been widely studied. However, to date, relatively few studies have focused on the effects of phosphorus (P) input on plant biomass and diversity, particularly in alkaline drylands with elevated N deposition. MethodsA long-term field experiment with a multi-level P addition rate (0-16 g P m-2 yr-1) plus 5 g N m-2 yr-1 in an alkaline desert steppe was conducted in northwestern China from 2015 to 2021. The effects of nutrient addition on plant community variation were investigated. Their relationships with soil properties, plant-microbe-soil C: N:P stoichiometry, and climatic factors were also analyzed. Results Under N addition, plant community biomass and diversity were slightly affected by P addition (P > 0.05). Although there was significant interannual variability in the plant community (P < 0.01), the interaction between P addition and year was not significant (P > 0.05). Variance partitioning and structural equation modelling showed that plant community variation under N addition was highly resistant to P addition and that soil properties (electric conductivity, available nutrients, and phosphatase activity), plant-microbe-soil C: N:P stoichiometry (plant total N, soil total N, and microbial biomass P), and climatic factors (average monthly temperature and precipitation) combined to regulate their stability. Conclusions Our findings indicate that the effects of long-term P addition on the plant communities of desert steppes with N addition are limited. Future P enrichment may not pose substantial risks of plant community alteration in dryland ecosystems under N deposition. |
