英文摘要 | The study area is a part of the Western Himalayan fold-and-thrust belt in northern Pakistan and lies in the hanging wall of Panjal Thrust between Hazara-Kashmir and Indus syntaxes (Fig. 1). The present study uses stratigraphic appraisal and structural analysis to understand the tectonic evolution of the western Hazara Ranges. Based on detailed field mapping and structural analysis, the Western Hazara Ranges are broadly divisible into three structural domains: Sherwan, Aluli, and Pind Khan Khel. Each of these three structural domains comprises a major synclinal fold structure that exposes the Early Cambrian Abbottabad Formation in the core and Precambrian Tanawal Formation in the limbs. The syncline folds are doubly plunging and upright in nature. The basement rocks in the hanging wall of Panjal Thrust belong to Tanawal Formation which dominantly comprises of quartzites in the study area but changes to quartz schists and garnetiferous schists in the northern parts of the Hazara arc, while in the footwall, the Hazara Formation which is dominantly slates with some minor limestone is present as a basement sequence. Both blocks with different basement rocks are overlain by similar Early Cambrian Abbottabad Formation. This study attempts to explain the difference of basement rocks across Panjal Thrust through a tectonic evolution model, which suggests that the Pan-African orogeny is responsible for the basement stratigraphic changes while the Himalayan orogeny folded the Early Cambrian sequence in broad synclines and anticlines. The present exposures of Early Cambrian sequence in the core of synclines resulted due to subsequent erosion of anticlines and preservation of synclines. |
