英文摘要 | The formation of curved orogens (oroclines) is commonly attributed to buckling around a vertical-axis in response to orogen-parallel compression. Nonetheless, the viability of this mechanism in a three-dimensional stratified lithosphere is controversial. Here we use numerical models to assess how the horizontal stratification of the lithosphere affects buckling processes. Our three-dimensional models include a crustal ribbon, representing an orogen, embedded in a stratified matrix that consists of an upper mantle layer overlain by a crustal layer. We tested different ribbon geometries (in cross-section) and crustal ribbon viscosities. Regardless of the viscosity contrast between the continental ribbon and the crustal matrix, our models did not produce oroclinal buckle folds (i.e., vertical folds of the continental ribbon). Instead, due to the horizontally stratified lithosphere and associated viscosity imbalance in the upper mantle and crustal layers, the models produced gentle upright-horizontal lithospheric-scale folds. The results suggest that compression of a continental ribbon parallel to its length plays a minor role in the formation of oroclines. For continental ribbon buckling to be viable, additional factors must be accounted for, such as external sources of instability or more complicated rheological settings. We, therefore, conclude that ribbon buckling is unlikely to drive orocline formation. These findings call for a reassessment of the geodynamic evolution of specific oroclines (e.g., Kazakhstan Orocline, Alaskan oroclines), which have previously been described as buckled oroclines, but were likely formed in response to other mechanisms, such as oroclinal bending in response to plate boundary migration. © 2021 |
