英文摘要The aim of the present project is to study CO2 photo-adsorption processes on metal oxide surfaces and investigate how those processes can be tailored for proton-coupled electron transfer reactions for the direct reduction of CO2 at oxide surfaces. The project rests on preliminary data which indirectly support the main features of a photo-stimulated CO2 capture process through an hitherto unexplored mechanism: hole oxidation of under-coordinated lattice oxygen and simultaneous reduction of adjacent O2. Here, we aim at specifically prove and quantify the process by advanced infrared surface spectroscopy techniques at different experimental conditions extending from vacuum based single crystals to ambient pressure nanoparticle systems. We will develop density functional based methods to account for charge corrections of the potential energy due to interband transitions and interfacial charge transfer, and further compute adsorbate structures and vibrational spectra using methods developed by the applicant. Our results may contribute both to our understanding of naturally occurring geochemical CO2 mass balance processes, and also pave the way for new direct so called direct air capture (DAC) technologies, and contribute to the growing field of synthetic fuel production through direct CO2 photo-reduction.
