英文摘要If carbon dioxide (CO2) can be used as a feedstock for producing energy resources and commodity chemicals, this would ultimately reduce the amount of CO2 entering the atmosphere and limit our dependence on fossil fuels. Converting CO2 into other compounds requires either a photo- or electrochemical reaction where the reaction rate and selectivity are enhanced using a catalyst. However, a significant gap in mechanistic understanding of the CO2 reduction reaction (CO2RR) prevents us from developing efficient catalysts to fulfill economic and environmental demands.This project will use experimental chambers designed and built at Stockholm University.  The POLARIS chamber has the unique capability of using synchrotron radiation to follow catalytic reactions at ambient pressure under realistic reaction conditions. The TITAN chamber uses ultrashort X-ray pulses from a free-electron laser to reveal transient intermediates and initial reaction steps of the CO2RR. Our coherent experimental and theoretical thrust aim to develop a fundamental understanding of the elementary reaction steps, bonding of intermediates, activation barriers, and interfacial charge transfer through analyzing the performances of model CO2RR systems.The obtained knowledge will inspire the development of new efficient catalysts for converting emitted CO2 back into sustainable fuels and desirable chemicals. This project thus has the potential to mitigate climate change and secure our energy future.
