英文摘要Anthropogenic climate change is commonly recognized as one of the major threats to global biodiversity as numerous ecosystems are at risk of severe impacts. It is thus crucial to understand how species respond and adapt to the spatiotemporal variability of their climatic niche. While an increasing number of studies are showing that species are reacting to climate changes in various ways, we currently lack an understanding of how these various responses are interacting and whether that differs among species and across latitudinal gradients. Here, I aim to investigate three different response types to climate change among bird populations measured as changes in their distribution, habitat use and morphology. For this, I will utilize unique long-term monitoring data from four northern countries, covering approximately 2000 km latitudinal gradient and including ringing records and wintering censuses. I will focus on winter season, as climate change responses are predicted to be faster during non-breeding compared to breeding season. This is because climate is warming faster during winter, and birds are likely more flexible during the non-breeding period. I will first compare the rate of response of the three variables separately and examine the relative strength of each response per unit of observed change in temperature - both novel approaches that have not been used before. In the next step, I will examine potential correlations among the responses and test whether these are positive or negative. Finally, I will clarify to what extent the cumulative effect of these responses (i.e. their sum) matches the observed temperature change and how this may ultimately be linked to the population dynamics of species. I predict stronger responses for the three variables in more northern bird populations given faster temperature warming further north, while the time lag between the responses and the ongoing change in climatic conditions might not differ along the latitudinal gradient. In addition to geographic variability, the response strength and direction of correlation among the responses will be species dependent. I expect this to be reflected in the different population dynamics, so that species showing faster responses and possibly even synergies among the response types have stable or increasing population trends. Ultimately, my research on these novel questions aims in developing a new ‘cumulative climate response’ theory, being relevant for all researchers investigating impacts of climate change on living organisms and can thus inform key research directions in the future. In addition to advancing our understanding on climate change impacts on biodiversity, I expect my findings to contribute to future conservation measures for the protection of species under current and future climate change.
