英文摘要 | We compare ambient carbon dioxide (CO2) levels measured at three spatially separated locations in Alberta and show that the daily, seasonal and annual patterns of concentrations vary significantly from one location to the other, indicating different levels of anthropogenic activities on a regional scale. Impacts of city based activities on ambient CO2 levels were compared between a large metropolitan city (Calgary) and a hamlet (Lac La Biche). Mean levels of CO2 in Calgary were approximately 50 ppm higher when compared to a global baseline monitoring station at Mauna Loa, Hawaii. Frequent enhancements in ambient CO2 levels on the order of 100-200 ppm were observed in the city during wintertime. The elevated CO2 levels were attributed to fossil fuel burning for winter heating. For the Lac La Biche hamlet, wintertime variations were on the range of 20-40 ppm, signifying lower levels of fossil fuel burning during the wintertime. Lowering of ambient concentrations from wintertime levels to and below the Maona Loa baseline level was observed at both cities during peak summertime periods. The effect signifies the efficacy of the boreal forest surrounding the cities in plant photosynthesis assisted carbon sequestration process. The natural carbon capture process was stronger at Lac La Biche due to a larger Boreal forested area surrounding the smaller hamlet. Significant carbon sequestration effect was observed in a pristine boreal forest location at Peace River where ambient levels of CO2 during summertime was monitored at levels of up to 50 ppm below that at Mauna Loa.
