Waste-to-energy production of alternative energy source using landfill technology

英文摘要Recently, the world start suffering from energy resources depletion and energy demand has been a serious concern. Sudan confronts a problem to deal with fossil fuel resources limitation and the increasing of waste accumulation. Introducing new technologies such as waste to energy (WTE) may help to handle such concerns. The objective of this study was to design and construct a landfill cell to provide an appropriate technical solution for both waste and energy sectors, and also to measure landfill gas (LFG) and specially the CH4 content that can be produced. The results showed the feasibility of this technology to produce a source of energy from municipal solid waste, which can be an alternative to fossil fuel. The gas analyzer GFM410 was used to analyze the extracted LFG contents, CH4 content varies in the range from 48% to 56% and CO2 vary in the range from 39% to 47.2%; Using LandGEM model ver. 3.02 to predict LFG contents for 10 years and results show the total LFG, CH4 and CO2 at 2019 are 0.025 Mg/year, 0.0067 Mg/year and 0.0185Mg/year respectively which was the peak year, 0.0067 Mg/year was equivalent to 10.1 m3/year for CH4. Using LFG as fuel to run engines at WTE plant would help to reduce GHG emissions and usage of fossils fuel, landfill technology representing a proper solution for both energy demand and waste contamination problems; the key factors for this new technologies is to increase the environmental awareness among the people so they will start to treat waste as value energy source.
