英文摘要

Despite the immediate threat to human survival posed by climate change, population remains a contentious topic for feminists and environmentalists alike. The most effective way to lower the birth rate is to improve the reproductive health and autonomy of women, but the resurgence of the global religious Right threatens progress, deploying abortion as a political lever in an attempt to erode women's reproductive rights worldwide, and there is disagreement among environmentalists about appropriate remedies. For most, however, China's recently relaxed one-child policy is cited as an indefensible violation of women's human rights. Two high-profile Chinese novels, Mo Yan's Frog (2009) and Ma Jian's The Dark Road (2012), condemn the one-child policy by focusing on coerced late-term abortions. In the Chinese context, their dissent reads as subversive, but their defense of women's freedom to reproduce paradoxically replicates the American antiabortion discourse of regret, guilt, and atonement, which seeks to curtail women's freedom not to reproduce, both at home and abroad. The enthusiastic reception of these novels by the transnational antichoice constituency shows how literary works that migrate globally through the unstable medium of translation may produce unexpected and disturbing ideological conjunctions.
