Canadian Heritage predicts that more migrants will be moving to Canada as a result of climate change disasters in a 2019 report obtained through an access to information request, according to Blacklock’s Reporter. Over the next decade the world will face significant social, political, economic and environmental transformations that will have a profound impact on Canadians, the department reportedly wrote in Diagnostic: Technology, Creativity and the Economy. The world is changing and we must consider changing how we operate. Nimble, experimental options are needed, but we know that change takes time. The department added in a later section on climate change: It is forecasted that there will be increased and more frequent wildfires, floods and heat-related deaths, and a corresponding increase in climate-related migrants. This mirrors a research paper three years earlier from Policy Horizons Canada, a Privy Council think-tank, which also predicted Canada would bring in more refugees as climate change destroyed more habitats across the globe. Released on Oct. 1, 2016, Canada 2030: Scan of Emerging Issues stated in its section on sustainability, that climate change effects, such as drought and food insecurity in some parts of the world, could possibility lead to regional conflicts, spread of disease and a rise in commodity prices over the next 10 to 15 years, among other things. Even companies are evaluating their exposure to the rise in extreme weather events and are searching for climate-proof regions for their production facilities, the Policy Horizons report added. Canada has the opportunity to become a preferred destination for climate refugees as well as companies trying to reduce their supply chain exposure to the risks of climate change. Canada may also have an opportunity to become an important producer of water intensive goods in the future.
